Hawthorne, CA

Hawthorne is a city in Southwestern Los Angeles in California which is about five miles (approx. 8 km) from the Los Angeles International Airport with a population of over 84,293. It has an area of 6.1 square miles (approx. 16 km2) which predominantly land.

It has to the North, a community of Lennox and the City of Inglewood. To the East is the community of Athens and the city of Gardena. To the South is the community of El Camino Village and the city of Lawndale. To the southwest is Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach and El Segundo is seen in the west respectively.

imgres33The east-west streets includes Rosecrans Ave, El Segundo Ave, and Imperial Highway. North-South Street include Aviation Blvd., Inglewood Ave., Hawthorne Blvd., Prairie Ave., Crenshaw Blvd. and Van Ness Ave.

Hawthorne has a cool temperature as a result of the moderating effect of the ocean. It has relatively a good median household income and few of the population live below the federal poverty line.

There are about 29,869 housing units at an average density of 4,902.7 per square mile (approx. 1,892.9/km2), of which 7,623 (26.8%) is owner-occupied and 20,863 (73.2%) were occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.5%; the rental vacancy rate was 4.6%. 25,869 people (30.7% of the population) lived in owner-occupied housing units and 57,885 people (68.7%) lived in rental housing units.

It has a Press Tribune newspaper operating in the city.
